Friday Fictioneers – Connection

“Those need sorting,” Janet muttered to herself as she passed the dusty collection of photos. Her only connection to a mother she barely knew; to a life she yearned for.

Stirring the pile, Janet chose one photo and wondered: “Is that me, in the arms of my mum?”

So many strangers, who might not be. It was disquieting and intriguing!

Fear, her constant friend, hollered “Don’t ask; don’t seek. They won’t want you!”

Hope, a new quieter voice, whispered “Love is worth the effort!”

Trembling, she turned the photo and read out loud “Sister Annie, with Janet, 1953”.

Aunty and child.

Janet smiled.

Friday Fictioneers – distraction

Tip toe, through the tulips … through the tulips ….

Walking a concrete jungle, rain moistened; a slippery surface of fallen leaves

Humming to myself, lost in the freshness of clean, sweet-smelling air

Eyes part-closed, lost in solitude, the silence, the wetness

A babble, a murmur, a shuffling of feet, breaks into my reverie

Awakening to the world, intruded upon by chatter, by clatter

Opening my eyes to umbrellas!

Looking ahead, I walk on by, distracted momentarily

Dismissing the absurd, retreating to my bliss, humming to myself …. through the tulips, with me

Friday Fictioneers – Shadow

overhead-window

PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carrol

Thief of necessity, through open door
Into empty room, creeps
Heart thumps, breathing stutters
Nerves tingle, anxiety builds

Breeze drifts, into the room
Instinct to flee, peaks
Shadows shift, thunder booms
Wings beat, feel the fear

Food the imperative, urge to escape
Hunt in earnest, tweets
Fear looms large, hunger prevails
Shadows swoop, time presses

Crash from above, threat extreme
Sensory overload, heats
Panic, retreat, needs reassessed
Fear the victor, hunger abandoned

Escape now paramount, hunger flees
Weight of danger, presses
Beating madly, wings work hard
Shadows surrender to sunlight, enlightened

Friday Fictioneers – Japanese Garden

photo-prompt-5-october-2016

Photo prompt copyright CEAyr

Simply designed; aesthetically pleasing

Peace, tranquility; balanced with care

ponds of Koi add colour; serenity

a taste tease for passing pets

Pebble paths, raked fine, paved wide, straight

lead the guest – winding or pacing –

to interesting spaces; interesting traits

and quirky surprises

Bonsai trees, aged and perfect, delicate, refined

Encouraged with love; meticulous binding

A joy to behold; treasured through time

Partnered with architecture; imbued with history

Elements of stone, wood, bamboo and flora

Create an image of spiritual aura

a sense of mystery

Springs suddenly youth, impressively so

Cherry blossom – pink, white or red

Struts and blooms; then petals drop

Beloved – Friday Fictioneers

Friday Fictioneers August 17th

Reposted for Fandango’s Friday Flashback – 21 August

Smooth pebbles litter the beach and stepping through them, I stumble

Laughing, I push windswept hair out of my eyes looking ahead, for my beloved

6ft, fit and carefree, he clambers, crawls and skips over stones and puddles

As I fall, I cry out; when I look up he is by my side, hand outstretched

The devotion and concern in his face renews my confidence in him

And as he lifts me to my feet, we gently kiss and he leads me carefully

Away from the pebbled and precarious ground, to the beach sand and safety

Friday Fictioneers – Imagination

PHOTO PROMPT © Mary Shipman

I wake in the dark with bruise-like pain around my middle.

In complete darkness, with no sense of what surrounds me, I get to my knees and try to stand.

My eyes strain to see and my ears stretch to hear any sound.

A fluttering and as I recognise movement I notice a soft breeze, salt on my tongue and something else; bats?

Memories of stories – blood sucking, webbed wings and screeching. Are they hiding and waiting; holding their breath? If they cry, my heart will stop.

Bright lights; I scream and scream again at the movement – of sheets from the ceiling.

Flash Fiction: Summer Heat

Friday Fictioneers Wed 20.04.16

Summer heat; 40⁰C and bodies melting!

Toiling all day; no lunch and only the water bottles we each carried

Mother was ill and downtown seeing the doc

Younger kids chasing sheep and jumping in bales, trying to keep out of the way

Lots to do in the bush, for kids, and for us adults

Digging holes for new posts; ground like concrete after a long and dry season

Replacing old fencing, a necessary evil; now metal posts and not wood

“Kids, stay away from the wire!” They won’t be told!

Screams as the smallest falls and is caught up in the barbs

Flash Fiction: Muddy Waters

antiques-along-the-mohawk

* * *

Muddy waters, what do they hide
Currents flowing, boat traffic, stirring the water
Car carcasses, a child’s bike, household detritus; bodies

Muddy waters, obscuring the truth
Bottom feeders, sludge and slime, parasites
Stories lost, identities stolen, dreams afloat

Muddy waters, muddled, befuddled
Living longer, living lonely, expectations
Age advancing, deterioration accelerating, death at hand

Muddy waters, clearing slowly
Light upon us, eyes wide open, hands reaching
Hands held, sweet kisses, comfort given

Muddy Waters, music sublime
Guitars twanging, blues in rhythm, stories shared
Mississippi rolling, swampy puddles, dreams realised

Muddy no more, long way to go
Hopes and dreams, highs and lows, love and friendship
Sun through the trees and hearts singing
