I dreamed when I was young of exploring the world. Top of the list was the Trans-Siberian Railway.
I’d imagine being a brave young woman travelling the Far East in the late 1800s or 1920s.
I love to travel, but in the end I’m not that adventurous.
I long for the escape, breathe deep (and perhaps cough) exotic air, touch gently the people and places entrenched in ancient cultures, who smile with grace but wish I’d leave.
Fat wallet in hand, and friendly guide.
Dream in clean sheets at the end of the day. [94 words]
Thank you Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for continuing to set this 100 word or less challenge. It is certainly a commitment appreciated by many. Other 100 word stories can be read here.
Nothing wrong and lots right with that dream. Maybe when time machines exist she can actually do it.

Fat wallet makes a difference. Fortunately for me, the home has been wider than my wallet. I’m blessed to have it that way.

Very clever juxtaposition of the tourist’s experience and that of the local inhabitants. Your story makes its points with subtlety, but clearly.Thought-provoking.

Dear Trish,
I’ve dreamt of traveling also. Alas, I lack the fat wallet. 😉 Good one.

I actually was planning a trip on the Trans Siberean from Beijing to Moscow later this year but due to current events, I think I’ll put it on hold!

Yeah. And we’re running out of years to do these things. You think there’s plenty of time, then ill health, age, pandemic, idiots shooting guns 😒

I do love to travel and get to know the different cultures. I’d hate to be considered ruinous, though.

The sheer numbers of visitors to what used to be special places puts on too much pressure. Waste disposal, wear and tear, pollution of extra masses. But do you turn away the commercial wealth they bring, to preserve? I think some places are.

For sure. I do try to stay away from those places that are crowded. But I know, it’s a double-edged sword.

An interesting and uncomfortable portrait of the modern adventure traveller

Yep, I love to travel but I’m one of those tourists ruining cities and environments just by travelling there.

You would need a fat wallet. I could imagine it would be such a fine adventure
