Friday Fictioneers – Saviours

Thank you Rochelle Wisoff-Fields for continuing to set this 100 word or less challenge. It is certainly a commitment appreciated by many. Other 100 word stories can be read here.

And we waited.

Emotions a recipe of fear, excitement and desperation.

We were about to lead the people of earth to a better place.

The first colonist, non-specialist, earthlings to be shot into space.

Sent to the moon to practice living off-world.

Others had gone ahead, to build, to test, to prepare.

Many of them remained, prepared to be our mentors.

With no living family, no loved ones to miss or to worry about us, we were the chosen ones.

On behalf of mankind, we would make this work.

Succeed, on behalf of the species. [95 words]

  1. You cleverly incorporate a grim note into what is in many ways an exciting adventure. I think it’s probably the word ‘desperation’ in your second sentence. Excellent take on the prompt, too.

  2. Nothing to lose except life itself; possible gain for all humanity. However, one wonders if an off-planet settlement created by humans will ultimately be any different than life here on the blue globe.

    • There are so many books that explore the expulsion of people onto other worlds. Often there is the element of ‘need to leave because earth is doomed’ – wars, over population or diminished resources.
But there is also a large number about the adventure, the new horizons, space ‘the final frontier’.
Man is always man, good and bad. The real disappointment is how we always revert to character and overwhelmingly destroy and find a reason to go to war.
For the 1 person delighted to meet an alien, there are 20 who are afraid of difference, or don’t want to share.
      Same, same.
